Appreciative Inquiry
AKA Call to Inquiry
Intent Appreciative Inquiry is about the coevolutionary search for the best in people, their organizations, and the relevant world around them. In its broadest focus, it involves systematic discovery of what gives 'life' to a living system when it is most alive, most effective, and most constructively capable in economic, ecological, and human terms. AI involves, in a central way, the art and practice of asking questions that strengthen a system's capacity to apprehend, anticipate, and heighten positive potential. It centrally involves the mobilization of inquiry through the crafting of the "unconditional positive question" often-involving hundreds or sometimes thousands of people. In AI the arduous task of intervention gives way to the speed of imagination and innovation; instead of negation, criticism, and spiraling diagnosis, there is discovery, dream, and design. AI seeks, fundamentally, to build a constructive union between a whole people and the massive entirety of what people talk about as past and present capacities: achievements, assets, unexplored potentials, innovations, strengths, elevated thoughts, opportunities, benchmarks, high point moments, lived values, traditions, strategic competencies, stories, expressions of wisdom, insights into the deeper corporate spirit or soul-- and visions of valued and possible futures. Taking all of these together as a gestalt, AI deliberately, in everything it does, seeks to work from accounts of this "positive change core" -- and it assumes that every living system has many untapped and rich and inspiring accounts of the positive. Link the energy of this core directly to any change agenda and changes never thought possible are suddenly and democratically mobilized.
Motivation Building a database of Appreciative Inquiry questions and their reputation
Applicability A form of group discussion which is driven by questions whose answers address the positive core values of the members of the group.
Method Support via Call to Inquiry method, which collects a community a question, and facilitates the interview process, either in person or via electronically facilitated means
Consequences AI begins a dialog, opening up new opportunities to Do Something

Cascade
Intent A cascade is an action which occurs at multiple characteristic scales simultaneously. They may be created by Intrinsics. While Causality is generally discussed in terms of a single characteristic scale, cascades are based on interactions between scales which may not recognized at a certain characteristic scale.
RelatedPatterns Intrinsic Cause CharacteristicScale Diachronic
Cause
Intent A causal effect within a defined characteristic scale.
RelatedPatterns Cascade CharacteristicScale
Characteristic Scale
Intent A portion of the continuum of scale which is used for a perspective, typically chosen in order to understand causality. For example, physics, chemistry, and biology typically have defined characteristic scales within which they are able to perform scientific experiments to establish causality. Intrinsics which cut across scales, and interact as cascades, are not necessarily prominent at specific characteristic scales, even though they may be significant contributors to a cascade. For example, the intrinsic of TRUST may not be significant at the 'patient billing' characteristic scale, but it is a very significant factor in a cascade of effects ranging from patient-physician interaction, health care system, and society as a whole. The loss of trust at one level may have cascading effects at other levels. Similarly, the reintroduction of trust mechanisms at the patient care level may have a cascading effect on the rest of society.

FoamySpace
Intent Foamy Spaces are those in which dimension is a dimension. As perspectives on the space move about the space or in time, different dimensionality may emerge. Foam may be caused by Named Voids describing specific Unknowledge (for example, the cells in the Period Chart of the Elements which were unknown when Mendeleyev created the chart). Or, spaces may be of fractal dimensions, such as the Mandelbrot set.

FractalScope
Intent A perspective browser which presents knowledge and information in a scale-free manner. This browser allows the viewer to take the perspective of an intrinsic across different dimensions. A hypothetical model would be a camera with an extreme range of zoom lens. As the lens zoomed, the viewfinder would have a fixed patterns, perhaps outlining certain features, such as identity. The viewfinder may show the identity of a mountain at telephoto range, the identity of a galaxy at telescopic range, the identity of a tree, house, person, organ, cell, or chromosome.

Intent A scale-independent property Intrinsics are properties which are evident independent of any particular characteristic scale
KnownUses Health may be viewed from a continuum of characteristic scales, such as molecular, genetic, cellular, organ, immune system, whole person/mind, family, community, nation, species. The notion of IDENTITY applies at all these levels, so that one might speak of the identity of an immune system and the identityt of a community.

Participant
Intent A list of the participants in a conversation, including agents and people. Participants are tracked by the degree of activity in the conversation, their preferred contexts, reputation, etc.
RelatedPatterns Discussion
PathologicalExtreme
Intent A rare but attention-getting extreme situation may have the effect of tipping the attention of a scale-free space. For example, a sequence of news stories about shark attacks may gather public attention, despite the fact that the prevalence of these attacks may be down. A patient complaining of a headache may be given an MRI rather than two aspirin and bed rest, simply out of the fear of the pathological extreme.

Positive Core Values
AKA Virtues
Intent Connecting people and organizations according to their positive core values requires an approach which is able to pierce through a cynical shell which often obscures the positive core underneath. Through the use of Appreciative Inquiry, Positive Psychology, Postive Deviancy, storytelling, and many other techniques, we will create an ever-expanding web of interaction which replicates successful, uplifting ideas and actions.
Motivation To create an information space for postive discourse, and a language of uplift based on discovering and replicating successful ways of communicating postive core values. To create a metaphor for human relations which is inclusive of, but not dependent on, personal spiritual, religious, and cultural beliefs.
Applicability The foundation upon which the uplift model is based, that there are positive core values of humanity which are common to all, and that by providing ways of connecting people to express and act on these values, we will achieve a self-organizing, self-propagating cascade of uplift
Method Communicating these values at all levels of the space. Asking users to confirm these values as part of the acceptable use criteria for joining the space.
Consequences People will come to expect others to interact in positive ways.
KnownUses These values are the core of the entire uplift space

Motivation reduce cost of cooking, gathering fuel, and environmental load.
Applicability Most effective in areas with significant sunshine. Less expensive, cardboard boxes do not work in areas with monsoon season
Method teach people to build solar cookers from simple materials, including carboard boxes, plastic sheeting, and aluminum foil.
Consequences Reduces deforestation and desertification, reduces walking time to gather fuel, reduces air pollution.

Stuff
Intent That which is in the known space, including the Named Voids which link to the unknown
Synchronic
Intent A perspective based on a snapshot in time The perspective of a snapshot in time.
Motivation Our current perspective tends to be limited to synchronic within certain characteristic scales. An alternative to this pattern, the Diachronic Intrinsic perspective, provides language to talk about the evolution of ideas and knowledge across scales, as well as provide a mechanism for communicating the role of cascades.

Unknowledge Loop
Intent The process of growing a space by filling named voids, which in turn create more named voids.
Unknowledge Pool
Intent The is a collection of the NamedVoids which have been created in WITTy conversation, representing expressions of those things which are unknown. Pattern weavers may use this pool to find MissingNothings which can then be used to create or refine patterns. Significant NamedVoids may be collected into a Tapestry, showing the interplay of that which is known and that which is unknown.
Motivation The pool allows discoure to proceed, naming voids to be filled in later.
Applicability The Wiki protocol is an example of this. For example, a WikiWord can be entered onto a page, which then appears with a question mark after it. The user has created a NamedVoid. This appears in the UnknowledgePool until it is filled in. The progress of the word, first as unknown and later as known, is tracked as part of the diachronic perspective of the system.

Uplift Hotline
AKA Hello Peace
Intent This pattern establishes a dial-in telephone hotline which people may call to talk to people on the other side of political, religous, or culture divides. It provides an opportunity for people to connect at their positive core values in a safe manner. Ideas and stories which emerge from the hotline relationships can be used to further detect and replicate uplift patterns.
Motivation Overcome tensions and dividing issues and allow people to communicate at their positive core values and concerns for community uplift.
Applicability Two or more groups divided by social, political, or cultural barriers can use an anonymous telephone hotline system to meet each other, discuss differences in a safe, positive environment
Method Set up a hotline which allows dial-in access for people to call each other.
Consequences Improved social cohesion, relief of tensions, community building even in the face of tensions. Conversations may trigger other stories and patterns of uplift.
Variations Can this be used for other forms of uplift, for example on-line chat rooms, etc.?
KnownUses This hotline started in Israel, and drew 25,000 callers per month several months after it started.

WITT
AKA WITT Protocol WITTY Conversations
Intent Conversations may be linked to a stack of Contexts which then shape the conversation. These contexts may be declared at the outset of the conversation, or may be declared during the conversation itself. Conversations which are structured by the patterns contained in the contexts are said to be Witty.
Motivation Ludwig Wittenstein said, "That whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must remain silent." The Witt protocol allows speakers to describe NamedVoids which thereafter allows them to speak about what is unknown. A simple instance of this is in the Wiki protocol, in which users may use Wiki words which then appear with a "?" after them. This creates a NamedVoid to be filled in later. The Witt protocol allows the graceful flow of a conversation, adding richer contexts of discourse. Pattern Weavers are able to look at the NamedVoids appearing in discourse, and collect them into future patterns and contexts.

Womens Empowerment
Intent This pattern uplifts of woman, family, community, or village by teaching women to read, do arithmentic, and start a credit union with their own savings. From this activities, women are empowered to continue their self-development, and teach other women how to do the same.
Applicability Where ever family and cultural support is enhanced by teaching women to read, start their own savings-led credit unions, etc.
